Name: Andy At 11:04 AM on November 2, 2006, little Andy, who had survived Hurricane Katrina and numerous medical issues, crossed Rainbow Bridge and is now pain free and romping in the grass and flowers alongside his little brother, Amos. All of us who knew Andy admired his courageous spirit. He fought to stay alive after that hurricane long enough to be reunited with his family; and for his family and foster family to become life long friends. He touched many hearts during his long life. Name: Austin Sweet Austin was entered in our Halloween 2007 Pet Photo contest and sadly he crossed Rainbow Bridge shortly after.He is missed by his mom and will always be remembered by us. His mom, Michelle wrote this about him: "Just wanted to thank you for letting me enter my sweet dog Austin in your Halloween costume contest. Not long after I submitted his entry, my sweet baby had to be put to sleep. He lived a long, very happy life, though...I just miss him terribly. And it was bittersweet waiting to see who finally won the contest, but we were very glad to have entered his photo in your contest. I adopted Austin on 3-6-1995, and he went to the Bridge on 10-15-2007. So Austin was my one and only baby for 12 years, 7 months, and 9 days." Name: Baby Baby's passing has left a huge whole in our hearts but we know she's running free and happy at the Rainbow Bridge. My husband writes me these poems to help me through the loss of a special baby. He calls her "Little Baby" as I had another foster that had been adopted that has passed. Even though this is a hard time for us to look at some of these sentences brings a smile to my face. I have hardwood floors; she would take off in a run and would slip and slide (a lot of times into doors or walls) but would always pick herself up, shake her head and keep on going. Her spirit was amazing. I would pick her up and she would lay her sweet head on my chest for maybe 20 seconds of love and then pop her head back up to look around again and then back her sweet head would go on my chest. We shared this sweet moment the night before she died. Her dementia took her ability to stay still for very long. Poor little girl could pace for hours at a time. If she paced for too long I would put her in a x-pen so she would be able to relax. Many times I would feed her by hand because she just wouldn't eat. It's time I wouldn't trade for anything right now. I am grateful that she chose us for her foster parents...she was our Baby! --------------------- Little Baby Wondering how I got here, but I don’t really know I was just told it was my time to go. I remember Greta and Sadie and Paris and Van, Then there was Tina; she’s the one with the plan. Saving as many as possible - all of us who are weak, Especially those of us who are way past our peak. I’ve been here five days now and it’s been lots of fun There are wide open fields where I can just run. There is always someone who will feed me by hand, And the place that I live now has a floor made of sand. No more sliding around, crashing into the doors, I did that so many times – it must have been scores! Life on earth was just great, but nothing like here. Cats live with mice and the lions with deer. I can even bark freely any time that I please, And run like the wind – well, trot like a breeze. If I had to go back, though, I know where I’d go. I’d go back to Tina’s and I’d let her know How thankful I was to have her for a while, And how much that I loved to see her great smile. I would tell her she’s doing the best that she can, and to never give up on her great rescue plan. But then she’d want to hold me and kiss me and stuff And I’d have to squirm free when I’d had enough. Well, Cassie and Callie, it’s been really great Fred and Mason, keep each other straight. I could never stand still very long, you know. ------------------ 5/26/11 - Baby's foster mom woke up to her being unresponsive today and was not able to bring her back with CPR. She had already crossed over to rainbow bridge to run and play with all her fur friends. It is a very sad day at YHR and devastating for Baby's foster parents as they loved and cared for her as she were their own. At least Baby had a home to call her own and live out the rest of her life with dignity. We'll miss you Baby. May 10, 2010 - I've got exciting news... Next month I will be celebrating my 2 year anniversary with my foster family. But most importantly I will also celebrate my 20th birthday! I think I've heard them talk about a surprise party! They think I'm hard of hearing but some things I can hear just fine! My health is still really good but my memory is not. I can't always remember to potty outside so foster mom puts diapers on me when she goes to work. It's humiliating but I understand! All in all life is pretty good for this old lady! I am so glad that my dental is done! And guess what I still have 7 teeth! I'm not a total gummer! They said I was a great patient. I'm still a little woozy so I'm off to bed! Until next time... xoxo Baby January 15, 2011 - Baby went to the vet dentist today! There is no other choice but to put this sweet 19 year old under and do a dental on her. The vet is a little concerned that she may have a tumor at the back of her mouth but we won't know until she has surgery. It's scheduled for Wednesday, January 19th if the blood work comes back OK on Monday. Please say a prayer for this sweet girl that she will come through the surgery and with little pain! Hi Baby here! I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. I hope it was Christmas we just celebrated! You see, at my age I am getting more forgetful and restless. Sometimes I pace around the house for no reason at all. But I do get a lot of exercise that way. Foster mom is going to ask the vet about some medicine for dementia, whatever that is! I've been feeling pretty good physically except I will more than likely need that dental that we have been trying to avoid. I got an antibiotic shot (ouch) that helped for a while but it looks like I will be heading to the vet dentist real soon. Foster mom has done everything possible to keep me from having surgery. She worries so much about it! We'll keep everyone posted on how it goes! xoxo Baby 8/18/10 - Hi everyone! Foster mom told me it was time to update my bio so everyone can know how I am doing. I'll have to make it short and sweet because it's almost nap time. I've had a birthday since my last update so I've been with my foster family for over a year. Other than that the only thing that's really changed is that antibiotics are no longer working for my bad teeth. They've tried many different antibiotics and even a shot! So, I am now looking at having a dental and going under anesthesia. I'm OK with it but my foster mom needs your prayers as she seems to be real nervous about it. I’ve heard that the surgery will probably be expensive since I'm a little on the older side and they have to take lots of precautions. It would be really great if you could donate in my name to help with the costs. I'm getting a little cranky so that means it's past my nap time. So I better go now! I didn't like her doing it either so I squirmed a lot and now I refuse to have my picture taken until my beautiful locks grow back out. 12/8/09 - Sorry it's been a while since my last update but when you're my age you tend to move a little slower. Speaking of my age...don't let that scare you! The vet says that my health is great and all I need is a antibiotics once a month for my teeth. Now that I am comfortable in my foster home I have let everyone see what a sweetheart I really am. I do like some attention but I'm not one of those silly needy yorkies that has to sit in a lap all the time. I try to keep the youngsters here in line when they get a little too rowdy but most of the time they don't listen to me! Whatever happened to respecting your elders? I love to take long naps and I'm really no trouble at all! I realize that it will take a special home to adopt an older gal like myself but foster mom tells me they are out there. I am waiting patiently for a home to call my very own. xoxo Baby July 20, 2009 - Hi there!! My name is Baby but the youngsters in my foster home call me "Granny". Yes, I am 18 years old! It has taken a while for my true personality to come out as I have been very sad about having to find another home after all these years. I was taken to a shelter without any toys,favorite blanket or any information to help my foster mom make things easier for me. They say my owner was having to move somewhere where no pets are allowed! Can you imagine that? I am happier now and I bark and prance around like some of the youngsters do. I have been to the dog doctor and they say my health is great! I do need a dental but they are not real sure they want to put me under. I may just need to take antibiotics once a month. Name: Barkley May 5, 2008 - Sweet Barkley went to Rainbow Bridge this morning, cradled in his foster mom's arms. We know he is flying high now with his angel wings and darling little flying nun ears. While we will miss his darling little face, we know that his health is restored and he is happy and free. Barkley, I know you will be in good company until the day comes when we will all meet again. I loved you so much and will miss you... FM ------ Little Barkley is a sweet little senior who does not care much for any interaction with humans or other pups. I shudder to think what he must have gone through before he came to us. He allows me to pet him when he is in his bed, but that is about the only time. If I pick him up his little legs go straight out and he has actually tried to bite me. Just a frightened little waif. He is a cutie pie and loves to eat, always waking up in time for his meals and snacks. Other than that, he is normally sleeping in his favorite cuddle bed. When he eats, he barks and mumbles a lot as if to talk with his food. His Auntie Anne loves his cute little "flying nun" ears. Name: Barty 3-9-08 - It is with great sadness that we report that little Barty crossed Rainbow Bridge today. He was resting comfortably in his foster mom's arms and quietly slipped away in his sleep. Our only comfort now is knowing how much he was loved this past year and that he is no longer sick. 2-4-08 - Barty is in chronic renal failure, but is hanging in there. He has some good days and loves the special foods his foster mom cooks for him. 5/11/07 - LOOK AT ME NOW! I lost ten teeth and don't miss them at all. I feel so much better and love to eat! I am blind and deaf, but I can find my way around and have managed to find every snuggle bed in the house. I let everyone know when I need to go outside! Oh..and foster mom shaved all of my hair off since it was so dirty and tangled. It feels so much better...and she says I am just the most handsome boy ever! :) ------------------------------------ This poor sweet soul was just pulled today from the shelter. He is a mess...poor little man. He was found in a ditch floundering in the water - AND he is blind. __________________________________________ April 20, 2007 - Leon's foster mom has decided to rename this little man after a blind man in the Bible who was healed by Jesus. His name was Bartimaeus and she plans to call him Barty! Such a wonderful name for this sweet soul! Barty has many medical issues and was not able to have his dental today. He has renal problems, hookworms and his blood sugar is elevated. He is now receiving IV fluids and will have to continue on them throughout the weekend. Hopefully he will show some improvement by the beginning of the week and then he will have the dental done. ---------------------------------------- April 19, 2007 - Leon/Barty is only 5 lbs 12 ounces and needs to put on more weight for his frame. He is blind, needs cyclosporin and antibiotics. Thankfully he doesn't have eye ulcers, but his one eye was glued shut from infections. It took our vet a long time with a tender hand to clean it up. Barty also has a fungal infection in his ears. He was so dirty and horribly matted and had very long nails. He was definitely on the streets for a few months, and how he ended up in that ditch - we just shudder to think. Barty is heartworm negative and has very bad teeth. In addition to his other medical needs, he will need a dental. We will update you on this precious baby as we continue to get him treatment and make him well. Please keep Barty and the other babies like him that are tossed in the streets in your prayers. If you can help to donate towards his medical care, we would truly be thankful. Name: Bogie 1/29/09 - Sweet Bogie past away very peacefully this evening. Godspeed my beautiful little angel, until I see you again. Update: 3/16/08 Bogie is doing as well as can be expected, especially when all the things that come with aging started taking over his frail little body. Bogie's luxating patellas have gotten worse, but the doctors are a little concerned about putting him under for surgery at his age. I have him on supplements that help, although his legs do stiffen up every now and then. Bogie has now lost pretty much most of his sight, but he's very cautious when he walks around. Bogie thoroughly enjoys his leisure time, a.k.a. sleep time with the other little seniors at the castle, but does not want any of part of that yappy mingling time with the wild crowd of young princesses and furry knights. Bogie is very content with passing the time of day by sleeping, eating, getting treats and let's not forget, no pupster is ever too old for cuddles and bellyrubs. If your home is filled with no expectations, but lots of love, understanding, patience and a warm cozy bed, then Bogie might just be the little senior knight that you've been longing to open up your heart to. Original Biography: Hello Everyone...it's me Bogie. I'm sitting here on watch duty in the tower at the Castle...you know, Carly's Castle and since things are a little slow tonight and very quiet at this late hour, I thought that I would tell you a little bit about myself. To begin with, I really can't recall why I was out roaming the streets all by myself, but you see in the Yorkie Kingdom that is a BIG NO-NO!!! So, you guessed it, I was picked up by the doggie patrol and locked up in the doggie prison. I was told that I had to stay there for a few days to give my owners some time to come and get me and if they didn't come for me then there was a good chance of me never seeing daylight ever again....YIKES!!!! I was so scared because I didn't have the kind of parents that cared about me, like some of the other pupsters here in the prison and I just knew that no one was going to come looking for me at all. At that very moment, I then realized that I was DOOMED!!!! THEN, like a Genie appearing out of a bottle...walks in this wonderful person to free me from the harsh environment and yapping noises of the prison. I was so thrilled but a little taken back because she showed me SOOO MUCH LOVE right away and yet, she didn't even know me that well. I must say that she is definitely a friendly little lady and she is the one that I now call my foster Mom. I just WORSHIP my foster Mom so much and I love being with her at ALL times. As a matter of fact she is just right down the hall from the tower where I am writing this letter telling you about myself. Yes indeed, I don't EVER let her out of my sight. If my foster Mom steps away for a split second, I will instantly run around the Castle looking for her and if I don't see her anywhere, I will then scream out my emergency scream for her. In the beginning she would immediately come running back to check on me with this frightened look on her face. Well, I think that she has finally caught on to that famous scream of mine because now when I go through that same routine, she will just call out from whatever room she is in to tell me that she is still here and will be right with me; but that doesn't satisfy me because I must have her by my side at all times. I even heard my foster Mom once tell someone that I scream like a woman who is having her purse stolen. Oh Gosh, I must say that I was so embarrassed when I found out that she shared that information about me to other foster Moms in the same village. Yea, well, I really don't care what I sound like, it's just that I never want to be left alone ever again because I've been there and it isn't any fun being lost in this Great Big Kingdom. Princess Carly didn't think that I sounded like a woman because she inducted me into the ring of honor as one of her Knights in Furry Armor, but of course before that happened I had to have a complete physical with the Castle's vet. It really wasn't that bad though. The Yorkie doctor said that I am around 10 yrs.old, and that I weighed a whopping 6 Lbs. She also said that I had NO worms in my heart and that my teeth are pretty enough and will do just fine for right now. There was one thing that the doctor did notice about me and that was the stiffness in both of my back legs and that's due to me having luxating patellas but at this time they are considered low grade. This is something that we will be watching in the future because once it starts giving me problems then I will have to go back and see the doctor again and maybe even have to have surgery. Oh and one other thing that I must tell you about me and that is that I am not Castle-trained yet and because of that I must wear a belly band so that I don't have an accident in the Castle. Boy, let me tell you, that Princess Carly has this "three strikes you're out" rule, but thank goodness our foster Mom is the one keeping score. Well, I hope you all enjoyed hearing about me and I would appreciate it if you don't tell Princess Carly, but I'm going to sneak out of the tower just a wee bit early tonight to go snuggle up with my foster Mom. I didn't like it too much because he had to stick me with a sharp needle to see if I have worms in my heart. This is too much stress for an girl like me. He said that since I'm 12 years old, it is sometimes hard to find a vein. He finally did and he said I didn't have any worms .............. YIPPEE! My foster mommy says that I'm ready to go to my forever home. I like older kids, like my people sister who's 13, but I wouldn't do good around smaller ones cuz they might mess with me and I could snap at them. I met my foster cat, Jasper, and I like him even though the other pups here bark at him. I like my wet food to be mixed with my dry food, but I will eat dry food alone if it's laying out. I like to lay outside in the sun and wander around the back yard. Sometimes I can't always hear when my foster mommy calls my name, but if she whistles that gets my attention. I don't travel very good in the car. I just don't like it and I surely don't like going to the vet (but what pup does?). I think that I would like to be with a older person in a home that's quiet and peaceful. Is that your home? ---------------------------------------------------- Original Bio 04/16/06: Hello, my name is Bubbles and I'm 12 years old and weigh around 14 lbs. Right now I'm not a very happy girl. I miss my real mom, Ms. Edna (hugs and lots of Yorkie kisses to you), who had me since I was a baby, but since we both got older, she couldn't care for me any longer. She gave me to Ms. Amy (Yorkie kisses to you, too) and the nice people at the Henderson County Humane Society where I stayed till my foster mom came and picked me up. She says I'm really sweet and I liked sitting by her and sleeping with her. I really don't know what's going on and I'm scared. I'm not ready to be adopted just yet because I still have to get checked out by the vet. But I do know that I would like to spend the rest of my days in a quiet home. I'm OK with other dogs as long as they are quiet and don't bother me. If they start bothering me, I will snap at them. I met Jasper the cat this morning and I liked him. I'll keep you all updated and hopefully I'll find my forever home to spend my retirement days in. Name: Cassie January 23, 2007: Heaven has another angel - Cassie got her wings today. Her little body could no longer fight but now she's free from pain. Thanks to all who prayed for this precious baby. Rest in peace, sweet girl. Update 1/23/07: The news wasn't good yesterday about Cassie. She has massive kidney stones in one kidney, a few stones in the other, and she has an enlarged heart. She still can't keep food down and is still on IV fluids. The vet is going to refer her to another hospital for more tests. Her vet bills are now over $1,000. Please keep this little girl in your prayers. Update 1/20/07: Unfortunately, Cassie is a very sick little girl. The stress of being dumped on the roadside and spending several days in a shelter along with a difficult spay took its toll on her little body. She's been in the hospital since Saturday, unable to eat, hooked up to IV's. She's slowly responding and we hope to have her home this week. Please keep this little girl in your prayers. --------------------------------------- Original bio: Cassie came from a backyard breeder who dumped her on the street. She’s a beautiful little pup who was used to produce litter after litter of puppies. When she could no longer have puppies, she was thrown away. She’s never before been outside in the sunshine and cowers in the corner of her crate. She thinks hands were made to hurt her. We can see the terror in her eyes. She had surgery on Wednesday; it will take time for her body to heal. It will take longer for her heart to heal and learn to trust us. Name: Charlie Girl 4/22/10 - It is with much sadness that we must let all of Charlie Girl’s followers know that she passed today at the vet’s office. Her foster mom had to rush her to the emergency vet last night and she was diagnosed with pancreatitis and HGE (Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis). She is pain free now and will join all of the other haven pups that have passed before her. She will be greatly missed and has taken a piece of her foster mom’s heart with her. 12/6/09 - Charlie Girl recently visited the vet because her skin was getting very dry and irritated. Seems CG blood results showed that she was a little anemic, but nothing too bad. They did decide to start adding Derm Cap liquid to her food (which is a combination of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids) to help improve her skin and coat. Other than this, this little senior is doing great and enjoying her senior life. She is still waiting on her forever family to come along, but is an optimist and knows that they will come when the time is right. 6/24/09 - Charlie Girl is a sweet little lady who is still waiting on her forever home where she can be the little Queen that she has learned to be at her foster home. She is in the same foster home as Mia, and has shown a little interest in this newcomer. This is quite surprising since none of the other residents seem to spark her interest. She loves to eat, take naps and will sometimes have small spurts of energy at night and play a little hide and seek around the sofa with foster mom. Other than this she is just a little sweetheart that needs her own space. 3/17/09 - Charlie Girl had her dental today and is feeling fabulous. She is still waiting on her permanent home that she knows is out there and is ready and willing to give “fresh breath” yorkie kisses to her new family. 1/13/09 - Charlie Girl has had her surgery to remove her mammory tumors and it was a success. She was also spayed while under anesthesia, so hopefully this will remedy anymore tumors from coming back. She is settling into her foster home great and is gradually putting on some well deserved weight. She even lets her foster mom pick her up now which is a milestone. Charlie Girl is not much of a player and does not interact with the other pupsters in her foster home. She can co-exist with other pups if they aren’t "in her face", but would probably do best as an only pet to be spoiled and loved by a stay at home parent with lots of patience. 11/14/08 - Charlie Girl has just entered her foster home. Right now we know that she has 2 mammary tumors that will need to be removed but this cannot happen right away because she is very underweight. Once we get some meat on her bones and she settles in, we will schedule an appt. to have the tumors removed and update her bio. Please consider donating to her vet care. Name: Cowboy January 15, 2011 - Yorkie Haven, and especially Cowboy's foster mom are in shock. Sweet little Cowboy was rushed to the vet today. Seems this little man's heart just could not hold up. He was diagnosed with pulmonic stenosis when we first took him in, and understood that his life span would be short; but we had hoped that we would have time to find him that home that would love and adore him and understand that he wouldn't be here long. Well, we actually did find that home as his foster mom loved Cowboy as if he were her own. We are sad that he didn't have longer, but are glad for the time that he had with us pain free. We love you Cowboy! October 23, 2011 - Update: Cowboy will be re-evaluated in 6 months and we are hopeful that he might be able to have a balloon valvuloplasty which could improve his prognosis. 10/19/11 - Cowboy was dumped like yesterday's trash. We couldn’t imagine why someone would just bring in such an adorable puppy and not want him any longer, but the answer came very quickly. Cowboy is a very sick little man, and unfortunately, his outcome will not be to live a long life as most yorkies can. We took Cowboy to the cardiology department at Texas A&M and after multiple tests, the results were very sad. The local vets initially had thought that Cowboy had PDA, a repairable cardiac condition; but he actually has pulmonic stenosis. This condition is not repairable and his life span may not be over 2 years of age. He can be a healthy, happy young man for the span of life he has, but he will need to be adopted to a home that realizes that they will feel sorrow well before they would want to. Of course, this can be the case with any pet, but with Cowboy, a shortened life span is a certainty. If you can find it in your heart to let this sweet, adorable, lively pup live out his life with you, you will be a blessed individual/family for sure. October 13, 2011 - BIO COMING SOON! Name: Despereaux 12/2/10 - Despereaux's age and past life finally caught up with him and he crossed over to rainbow bridge today. He had a wonderful life this past year and a half with his foster family and I'm sure he wished he'd have found them sooner. 10/3/10 - Hi Everyone, Despereaux here. I just went to the groomer and got my hair done, so foster mom decided to take some new pictures of me. I hate posing for the camera, but I guess I have to since I'm trying to find myself a new family. I haven't really been doing anything special this summer except hanging out with my girlfriend, a senior Dachshund here at the house. She and I have a nice relationship, but she understands that one day I must go. So if you have a senior girl who needs a nap buddy/boyfriend or even younger dogs that do not really need a playmate, shoot me an e-mail. 5/25/10 - Whew, it sure is starting to heat up down here in Louisiana and Summer has just begun. I decided to trot on down to the groomer and I asked for the "summer cut". A handsome gentlemen such as myself can't be seen with his hair hanging in his eyes. I have to say, I think I look very dapper and sporty. I think I actually caught the eye of a few female southern belles on my way home. I hate to tell them though, I'm not in the market for a girlfriend, I'm in the market for a family. I have plenty of great years left to show love and affection to my humans and just know that with my makeover, the applications are going to be pouring in. I've been doing fine at my foster home and have fallen in love with my foster mom's senior Dachshund. She will be quite heartbroken when I get adopted, but such is life. I do need a home to call my own and will find another girlfriend. My eyes tend to get a little dry, so foster mom puts lubricating drops in them everyday for me. She is such a sweet lady, but I know I can't call her my real mom. She keeps telling me that my "Mom" is out there somewhere and I will join her one day. I sure hope that is soon, because I'm ready to get settled. I'm already past the puppy/young adult stage of my life and want to be with my own family where we can live out our mature years together. 6/25/09 - Hi everyone. It’s me, Despereaux. I’ve been busy lately and haven’t had time to check in, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to quickly drop a few lines. I’ve been doing well in my foster home and foster mom has learned that I am very motivated by treats. I’ve also learned to enjoy my baths and like to be brushed. It makes me feel special and look handsome. I seem to have developed a loving relationship with one of my foster siblings. Her name is Kala and she is a senior (like me) but is a Dachshund. Foster mom puts eye drops in my eyes daily to help with my dry eyes and I am a good sport about it because I know that she just cares about me. I still wear my belly bands, because some days I can hold it and other days, well, you know. Foster mom and I aren’t walking as much now since it is hot outside and I am 9 years old and wouldn’t want to pass out of heat stroke on foster mom. I’d rather stay inside with Kala anyway. I would definitely miss my new girlfriend, but am still ready and willing to join my new furever family when they are ready for me. 4/13/09 - Foster mom and I were having fun with the camera the other. Check out my new pics. 3/11/09 - Hi all. I just wanted to let you know what I’ve been up to lately. I was recently neutered and microchipped. I’m recuperating right now, but I’ll be feeling better in no time and then foster mom and I can get back to our every morning 2 mile walk. You know that getting in shape was your New Year’s resolution - why not adopt a personal trainer that is already used to a 2 mile a day regimen. 2/25/09 - Despereaux was most likely discarded by his previous "owner" when his work product was getting low. So typical of the breeding world, Despereaux lost his job as "executive puppy maker" and was put on the street. Despereaux tells his foster mom that the work conditions weren't all that great, he received no pay, little food, and his office was a pig sty - so basically, he is glad to be in retirement. His previous home cared so little about his health, Despereaux now has no teeth. He doesn't care though, because they make high quality soft dog food just as they do hard dog food. And -- he looks really adorable with his little tongue sticking out the side of his mouth. Thank goodness Despereaux found a home that was willing to take him in and foster him until his next permanent family could be found for him. He will be getting neutered next week and will then be ready to go see what being a "Part of a Family" is all about. The vet estimated Despereaux to be 9 years old, But don't let his age fool you. Despereaux and his foster mom walk 2 miles a day and he loves it. He also loves to ride in the puppy stroller and/or be carried around the house. Basically, he just wants to be with his owner 24/7. He is inquisitive of the other pups in the house and can co-exist with them perfectly, but isn't really big on playing with them. He does well with his baths, rides well in a car, can sit for a treat and is CONSTANTLY wagging his tail. He is working on his potty training and sleeps well through the night. This poor baby acts like he doesn't even know what a toy is. Well, that's going to change, because Despereaux's future is going to be totally different from his past. He will have the life of a King with all of the soft food and treats that he can handle, he will not be expected to mate so that a greedy human can pay their bills, and he will once and for all be loved for who he is. He was a grouchy ol' man, but I loved him so much! I just hope he knew that. He will be so missed. 2/2008 Hi, It's me Eli or "Ol' Man" as I'm called around the house. I had an uneventful weekend .... I got a bath and my toe nails clipped. I just hate to be fussed over, but I sure smell good! Since I last wrote you all, I lost my eye sight in both eyes, so now I need to hire a seeing eye person to get around. The other pups in the house aren't too helpful in that area, but my foster mom and foster sister look out for me. Sometimes it's hard to figure out the difference between a wall and a human being. Other than this little set back, nothing else is new. I love to sleep covered up and either in my doggie bed or in bed with my foster mom. I'm still hopeful that my forever family is out there somewhere 11/2006 - Hi everyone ... Eli here. I haven't been doing too well lately, so I haven't been able to send in an update. The other night, I had a seizure and it really scared my foster mommy. The vet doesn't know what to think, but we're gonna keep an eye on it. I was also having problems with constant diarrhea and vomiting, so the vet gave me a shot .... just hate those things .... and some medicine that tastes like banana. I didn't like it too much, but I took it any way because my foster mommy gave me a treat. I can't go to my forever home just yet until we figure out what's going on. I hope to be better real soon. *If you can help this little one out with vet costs, it will be deeply appreciated. 7/25/2006: Hello Everyone! Eli here! Well, last Saturday my foster mom took me to this vet lady. I didn't like her too much because she poked something in my butt and poked me with sharp things down there, too. I showed her .... I showed her my teeth. Heee! She guessed that I'm about 10 years old, don't have any worms in my heart, but I have some fluid on my lungs. I have to take this medicine that makes me have to go potty all the time. NOT FUN! All that's left now is to go in to be neutered .... I haven't figured that one out yet, but I hope it doesn't hurt. Once that's done, I'll be ready for my forever family. Check back with me and I hope my family is out there. 7/16/2003: Hi ya! My name is Eli and my foster mom says I'm a sweet little boy. I'm not neutered, but I'm sure that will be fixed very soon. I weigh about 6 lbs. and I'm having trouble seeing a bit. I was found on the side of the road in Texarkana, Texas by a lady. When she couldn't find my family, she was told just to drop me back on the side of the road and they would find me. I'm glad she didn't cuz I was scared. She took me to the nice people at the Humane Society in Longview, Texas and they took care of me until my foster mom came and saved me. They said at the Humane Society that I barked so much for my family and that's why my voice is very horse. Does that mean I have a horse in my throat? Hope not, that sounds painful! Anyway, I like laying by my foster mom and walking around in the back yard. I'm working on going up and down the steps, I'm not very good at it. I'm not ready to be adopted, cuz I have to see the vet and the other pups here say I'm getting a shot and it hurts. But my foster mom will be there to hold my paw. April 18, 2010 - The Odd Couple....Forrest and Louis Author: Forrest's Foster Mom -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've had numerous foster dogs and normally my gang always accepts them but I wouldn't ever say great connections are made between any of them--that is, until Forrest came. Louis (our rescue poodle) has for some reason decided he is... Forrest's one and only guardian/best buddy. At first I thought Louis fascination was a food thing, bc Louis looooves food and Forrest gets to keep a food dish full at all times (bc he is so malnourished). Now, I'm not sure what it is about Forrest that has Louis so obsessed....but he is! Louis started out just laying next to Forrest's ex-pen, he wouldn't leave, even for the normal things Louis loves - like treats! After a couple of days of this, dh finally moved a bed next to the ex-pen so Louis would at least have a soft place to rest while he stood guard. I'll go to let the gang out and Louis will NOT go out the door until I tell him "I didn't forget Forrest", then Louis will go out but he waits on the patio step while I carry Forrest out....then and only then will Louis go outside with us. Louis used to love to run and play outside and still does but not until after he has stayed on the blanket with Forrest and I for quite awhile. Then he will run off and play but always checks back in to see if Forrest missed him. I've always thought Louis was a more sensitive dog than others I've had, but think now he is very intuitive also - I think he knows Forrest needed a friend. The laws of physical attraction are strange indeed! April 8, 2010 - FORREST NEEDS YOUR HELP! Hello, My name’s Forrest, Forrest Gump. (Now since you know my name, the effect will be better if you continue reading my bio in my voice). I came to Yorkie Haven Rescue because my previous mom and dad were going to have a baby. I have a lot of medical things going on right now and they did not feel they could devote the time and money I needed with a new one coming into the picture. Well, when I got to my new foster mom’s house, she was not sure what to think of me. I am skinny, my ears have a “leather look” to them, my head bobs involuntarily and I don’t have my “magic legs” beneath me. We’ve visited the vet and he took some of my blood. When the results came back, my liver enzymes was high. Although we’re not quite sure what it is I have yet, the doc said we’ll run some tests to see if it is liver shunt and go from there. I heard talk of “bile acid levels” and “ultrasound". Whew, this all sounds major, but if it helps me get back to normal, it will all be worth it. Foster mom says that I am just a sweetheart and can tell that I have the heart of a lion king. Since I’m so weak right now, she holds my water bowl up for me to drink, feeds me in a flat tupperware lid so it is easier for me to get to my food and dotes on my every need. Boy, I could get used to this treatment. I may never use my “magic legs”. I will lick foster mom’s hand to show my appreciation for what all she is doing for me and I know that with her help (and yours) I will be a healthy, happy young man one day. We are working on filling out the empty spaces in my belly, then hopefully this will help me gain some strength and get some muscles back in these rubbery legs and then, of course, find out and hopefully fix whatever condition I have. I have a long “to do” list, but as we all know, Forrest Gump, can do it all. The only thing I can’t do is afford to help foster mom with the money for all the testing I’ll need, so I’m reaching out to you, my friends, to assist us in that department. Name: Griffin Update: October 20, 2006 It is with a broken heart that I let you all know that my sweet little Griffin crossed Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday October 18, 2006. Griffin had taken a turn for the worst and was in heart failure. It just wouldn't have been fair to keep him going so the decision was made to send him home peacefully with the help of my vet, Dr. Effie. Poor Griffin was so tired and so ready to be at peace. He past away cradled in my arms about 5 to 7 minutes after Dr. Effie gave him the sedative injection. She never had to administer the euthanasia injection. We feel that Griffin was older than what is mentioned on his profile. I just couldn't bring myself to update his bio at the time but I want to thank each and every one of you for your warm and caring thoughts, prayers and donations. Godspeed to my beautiful little angel, until we meet again. Update: 10/11/06 Griffin is now back home at Carly's Castle after being in the hospital on an IV and medications for seven days. His lab values are still well above the high end of normal but they have improved greatly since they were first checked last week upon his arrival to the hospital. Unfortunately, at this time Griffin will not eat or drink on his own, so we are feeding him his food and water through a syringe. Griffin is very tired and exhausted and just wants to rest at this time. I am in hopes that Griffin will soon come around and show some interest in wanting to eat. I greatly appreciate all of your kind emails telling me that you have little Griffin tucked away in your thoughts and prayers as well as your generous donations. This precious senior boy is definitely not out of the woods by any means but I will be sure to keep you updated on his progress. Thank you! UPDATE: 10-05-06 Sadly, Griffin is in renal failure. Can you help with a small donation??? In the last 24 hours Griffin had become very picky about wanting to eat his food. An appointment was made to see his vet today and after a thorough examination, blood work and urinalysis I was given the sad news that Griffin is in renal failure. As if that wasn't heartbreaking enough for the day, it was also discovered that since his last visit, Griffin has developed a heart murmur. Griffin is now in the hospital on an IV and antibiotics. He will definitely be there for a few days and we will gladly update you on his progress as we get more information. Princess Carly would like to introduce to you one of the "regulars" here at the castle and his name is Griffin! Griffin is a senior but don't let that stop you from considering giving him that fur-ever loving home because honestly, Griffin is a really cool senior at that. Even though he's turned out to be quite the grumpy little fella in his old age we really want to think that he was a popular guy in his younger days. Griffin is absolutely adorable but he definitely does not like to be rushed into anything. Griffin is extremely mellow and minds his own business, takes his time when he goes out to potty and basically, doesn't have a care in the world..... just make sure you don't rush him into doing anything! As a matter of fact, I don't think he would complain if the sun decided not to come up one morning, just as long as he gets his meals and treats and that no one bothers him while he sleeps. He even prefers eating away from the other princesses and furry knights. Another thing about Griffin is that he does not like to be touched by any of the other Princesses or Furry Knights here at the castle. If Griffin is walking or just lying around enjoying a "senior moment" and one of the other pups runs past him without even touching him, Griffin snaps out a bark/growl noise as if he's telling the younger furkids that they had better slow down and watch where they're going. Griffin's is not into the party scene and goes to bed rather early and basically could care less if there are any other pupsters around for company. Though, Griffin is a senior, we really aren't exactly sure how old he is but the vet guesstimates him to be around 12 to 13 years old. He does have arthritis settling into his lower back and his back legs will stiffen up too. Griffin weighs a solid 5.7 pounds and even though he has some of his teeth he does prefer to eat soft food. He also does a wonderful job of going outside to potty. Griffin would do best in an adult only home as your only furkid but would most likely do just fine in a home with an older pupster who wasn't rambunctious. Name: Gus In Memory of Gus : I found Gorgeous Gus, a Westie, wandering the roads of our little town, he was dazed and confused. I can only think someone must have dropped him off, so they could forget about him, and his cancerous tumor on the left side of his mouth and face. Sadly, it was a very aggressive cancer, and nothing could be done for him. I made him as comfortable as I could and let him know he was loved and how sweet and gorgeous he was. I only had him a couple of weeks, but how I grew attached to him and the pawprints he left on my heart will be forever felt. Sweet Gorgeous Gus, I miss you. Name: Harley Name: Helen Poor little Helen. Although we do not know your history, it was very apparent you were neglected in many ways and were very sick. We hope you are now able to see, hear, walk around without pain, and most importantly are happy and running around playing with the other Haven’s Angels. Name: Jelly Bean 1/7/12 - It is with great sadness that we must inform everyone that our sweet boy, JB, has cross over to rainbow bridge today. He was in renal failure, so his foster mom had decided to let him go. She went in the back of the vet's office to see him and hold him so the vet could help him with his journey, but when he saw his foster mom, he slowly, but happily crawled into her arms and went on his journey on his own without the help of the vet. He was just waiting on foster mom to kiss him and tell him it was ok to travel alone. Rest in peace sweet JB and play with all the YHR babies that have crossed over before you. Now you are in perfect health. XXXOOO 11/9/11 - JB had another senior profile (blood-work) done and we're happy to say his values are the best they've ever been. We realize how close we came to losing this sweet guy. His white blood cell count is up though indicating another infection for him to fight off. He has been placed on several antibiotics and will be neutered on November 15th after being on the antibiotics for several days.. The news is not all good however. When doing an ultrasound on JB the vet noticed he had an enlarged prostate and a cyst. We are praying that the neuter will clear up several of his issues. Please keep this sweet little boy in your prayers!!! 8/1/11 - Hi JB here ... Foster mom is so funny she told me I had to update my bio because tonight I wagged my tail for her for the first time. She picked me up and kissed all over me. If I knew that's all it would have taken I would have wagged it a long time ago! It's been a tough adjustment leaving my long time home and going into foster care. I stopped eating and was having to be force feed for 10 days. I lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks and everyone got really worried about me. I even had to stay in the hospital where they could make sure I ate. They also found out I had a UTI but wasn't sure if that would cause me to not want to eat. I finished all my medication and I'm feeling better even eating without being forced but foster mom has to hand feed me. I've gained my 2 pounds back and I go back for bloodwork recheck Sat. Just like with Molly, I knew the moment I saw Jewels on the rescue site that she was a part of our family and I just needed to get her home. Eric was cautious, but believed in what I felt. Everyone agreed- we were the perfect forever home for Queen Jewels. Eric brought her home from Texas-like a proud papa; she was waiting for me by the door, with her beautiful tail fanning, when I got home from work that evening. It was as if she knew my schedule already-she had been with us all along, and we never skipped a beat. Jewels left us unexpectedly and far too soon, though. Our hearts ache for all we are going to miss with her. Her silly sound (chirp) in the middle of the night when she wants back on the bed, how she chews the leash when you walk her, how she falls/rolls on her back the instant you touch her, insisting on a belly rub...But we feel so blessed that we were able to come together- as we feel we were always meant to be. Some visitors came to look at my horses, they had three little yorkies with them, Libby was the oldest at about 11. They had adopted her from California, and moved here, but their landlord told them they had too many dogs, and they had to find a home for one. I immediately fell in love with Libby; who could not fall for that sweet little face? She gave me so much love and joy in the short 4 1/2 years. I lost her in December of '06 due to heart failure. She had struggled the last year with a collapsing trachea and chronic bronchitis. I know that she is strong and healthy now, bouncing around chasing butterflies. But I miss her so. Libby, you left your little pawprints on my heart and soul, I can hardly wait to be with you again..... Name: Mason Mason March 28, 2004-March 28, 2009 He came to our home three years ago today, Soon it was clear, people would turn him away. Scrawny when he came, this would simply not last, Like many through our doors, he ballooned pretty fast. Tina called him Mason, a fitting name we would find- He worked through a hard life due to a challenge of mind. Much joy that he brought us was at his own expense, That was mostly because of his lack of good sense. Always happy to see us, he would bark really loud, He even overpowered the rest of the crowd. He was a happy boy, but pick him up too quick, Better keep body parts clear or end up with a nick. Outside with the others-while they were having their fun, Mason was prancing and barking, then would take off in a run. At doors, he’d get so excited that he’d start to spin, We found that only tapping his tail would usher him in. He’d stop and he’d stare. We didn’t know what to think. His tail stood stiffly straight up, and he wouldn’t blink. Afraid of doorways? Well, we were never quite sure. But, many times we were glad that there wasn’t a cure. Because distemper took ahold of him while he was a pup, his poor body was forced to, too quickly grow up. Due to seizures and stress, he was an old man at age five, But his life was a full one, because we helped him survive. We made a decision, in my hands he passed from this life. He lived three extra years, though, due to the heart of my wife. Name: Maxwell Perhaps later I will write more about my sweet Maxwell, but for now this is all I can manage: We learned a lot together over the years. He taught me patience and I taught him trust. He had the heart of a lion and I know if he could have stayed with me forever, he would have; and if I could have kept him forever, I would have. A piece of my heart went with him at 7:20 AM on July 6, 2006. I like to think that my Mother is taking care of him until the day I will join them both. Name: MayMay MayMay Summer 2004 - December 4, 2007 My sweet MayMay crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on December 4, 2007 where I know she was met by all my children that crossed over before her. The pathology report showed that the problem was in her bone marrow although I do not know the medical terminology. In the late summer of 2004 as a stray kitten, MayMay was lucky to find my sister Cindy's fenced back patio where she found protection, food, water and love. When the tomcats started bothering her, Cindy had her spayed. MayMay moved in with me in February, 2005. Cindy's rescue work saved MayMay's life. I just gave her a loving home. Only God knew His plans for her. MayMay's life was short but, oh, she was loved. MayMay purred louder than any cat I've ever known. All you had to do was walk by her & she would start purring. MayMay & her 'twin' sister Maggie loved to play with each other. I called their late evening playtime "Kitties Gone Wild" as they ran up & down the hall chasing those invisible creatures only cats can see. MayMay stood her ground when Duffy ran up to her. I know she was thinking "stupid dog" & he was thinking "she won't run!". MayMay loved her window bed, crumpled paper, having her head scratched & her ears cleaned, she & Maggie's matching cat towers that sit in the front kitchen window where they crouched for hours watching birds eat sunflower seeds under the azaleas, sleeping near me, her "first mother" Cindy, my nephew Darren & my big sister, her Aunt Judy. Thank you Dr. Scott, Dr. Meschler & the staff at Glade Valley Veterinary Clinic for your dedication to MayMay's health and for the love I always feel the minute I walk in the door. The clinic has been my "home away from home" for so many years. We've been through this a number of times now but losing one of my kids is as hard on you as it is on me. I love you all. Little "Mia" was hit by a car on 11/26/07 and was waiting to be released from a shelter to receive medical treatment and become a Haven Foster Pup. Despite our pleas, the shelter would not release her for 10 days, and Mia passed away on the 7th day before we could get her out. Our hearts are broken for this little angel that we named Mia (since the shelter didn't even give her the decency of a name other than "This Dog"). We never got the chance to find out if Mia liked to munch on a Milk Bone or if she liked to sleep under the covers. We never got to smell her clean hair after a bath or get a Yorkie kiss before going to bed. It’s because of her that we do what we do. It’s for all the Mia’s we’ve not yet met. We know Mia is now free of pain and running with the other Haven pups. Hopefully she knows that some people on this earth did care about her and will always remember her in their hearts. Name: Missy May 31, 2010 - Heaven has another angel. :( Dear sweet Missy passed away quietly this morning. 9-24-09 - I kept having problems with my eyes. The vet said that I have dry eye, so they started putting drops in my eyes and they feel so much better now! I will need these drops for the rest of my life. Other than that, I have no medical needs! The vet said that I am quite the spry little senior girl! :) My hair is growing in and foster mom says I am a beautiful girl! All I need is a lap to call my own! Could it be yours? August 2, 2009 - Like a woman’s biological clock, my life clock is ticking and it seems that time to have a human family of my own is running out. The older we get, the quicker time passes and it seems that my twelve month year passes in about 6 months now. Because of my age, I may not be able to give you the next 15 years of my life. But I promise you this, whatever time we would have together would be memorable and I would love you and adore you more than any other pet could. Don’t be afraid and write me off because I’m a senior. You’ll be a senior one day and you would still want love and companionship. July 28, 2009 - It has become apparent that Missy and Mr. Jiggles are not as bonded as previously thought; so unless you just want to adopt them both, they can be adopted separately. Missy loves to be held and is quite active and alert for a 15 year old pup. July 2, 2009 - Missy had her dental today and has only a few teeth left. The vet said her teeth were some of the worst she has seen. She had two growths removed and the cysts on her eye were also taken care of. She came home and was bright eyed and bushy tailed already! She ate like a little piglet! It is so good to see her looking so well right after all of this. See attached pic of her as we were checking out at the vet. June 20, 2009 - Missy's blood work looks good and she is heartworm negative! Her dental has been scheduled for July 2, 2009. The only thing new that is noted is that we do not think she can hear. She is a very sweet girl and loves to be held. June 19, 2009 - Mr. Jiggles and Missy were discovered by family members to be living in difficult conditions. Their father was unable to care for himself or them any longer. He is now in a nursing care facility and the family reached out to YHR to help Mr. Jiggles and Missy. These two pups are 15 years of age and were very loved. You can clearly see that in the way they interact with people. It was just a very sad situation that led to them not being cared for except for food and love which clearly was provided. The family has paid for the grooming and intital vetting of these two pups. Missy will need a dental and will probably lose all of her teeth. She also has numerous skin growths that will need to be removed. Her vetting will be probably in the $500 - $600 range, so anything you can do to help will be very appreciated! Name: Mr. Jiggles August 27, 2009 - Sweet Mr. Jiggles went to Rainbow Bridge this morning, cradled in his foster mom's arms. He had been ill the past few days and had become increasingly weak. He had a seizure early this morning and was taken to the vet where he passed quietly. Little angel is is at peace now. Mr. Jiggles is going to be evaluated by a specialist for a suspected mass in his gall bladder. June 25, 2009 - Mr. Jiggles had an x-ray today to check his spleen which may have indicated cancer. Thankfully, the spleen is ok; but we found something totally unexpected. He has what appears to be a huge gall stone! For now, he is going to be started on SamE .. so far he is asymptomatic...no vomiting or other signs of distress. He does have a diminished appetite, but loves baby food and actually gained two ounces! We will check his blood values in a couple of weeks after the antibiotics have had a chance to work. June 20, 2009 - Sadly, it looks like Mr. Jiggles does have some medical issues. His white blood count is extremely high and suspicious for either Ehrlichia, Leukemia, or Lymphocytoma. He is scheduled for an x-ray in two days to see if his spleen is enlarged. Please keep this little man in your thoughts and prayers. December 24, 2009 - Dear sweet Ozzy passed away this morning suddenly. He was in his foster moms arms when it happened. He will be with the angels for Christmas. Rest In Peace little man. October 18, 2009 - Ozzy was doing a little bit better for a while, but this past week has been extremely difficult for him. We have started him on new medications and late yesterday he started to respond. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He is such a sweet little pupster. August 11, 2009 - Ozzy has good days and bad days. Sadly, the bad ones seem to be outnumbering the good. He is not a good candidate for surgery on his trachea, so we are doing all we can to manage him with medications and rest. The specialist said that his condition is guarded. Please continue to pray for this sweet little pupster. 7/30/09 - Ozzy is having a difficult time. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. His collapsing trachea is causing issues and he is on many medications that we hope will soon get him under control. 7/21/09 - Foster mom told me my talking needs to be minimized. I have been very sick for the past few days. Seems my collapsed trachea cannot take all of the excitement and barking. I have been to the vet a lot lately and they put me on all kinds of medicine to help me breathe properly and to minimize my coughing. Please say prayers for me...I love to talk and I just cannot do it right now. If I talk (bark) I go into terrible coughing fits. 7/8/09 - Can we talk? It is what I do best. In case anyone was wondering if I were ready to go to my furever home, I am. I have had all the necessary vetting needed, my legs are stronger than ever and I am as cute as a button. I know, that last one has nothing to do with being ready to leave my foster home, but you have to admit, it is a plus. I mean, just look at me in that polka dot cup and tell me that I would not bring a higher level of cuteness to your home. I do like to play with other pupsters, but attention from an adult two legger is something I would never pass up. My foster siblings and I have been talking (did I mention I like to talk), and none of us can believe that I have not been adopted yet. We even had a vote here in the house (secret ballot, of course), and I was voted “most likely to be adopted first”. So I ask you, why and I still here? June 25, 2009 - Ozzy is doing very well. His hind legs are getting stronger and he does not hold his leg up any more! He is quite the talkative little guy and loves to be held and cuddled! May 20, 2009 - Check out Ozzy's "glamour shot"! He seems to still be weak in his hind legs and might need to go through physical therapy. 3-20-09 - PLEASE HELP! Ozzy had his surgery on both hips and is recovering. True to his breed, he has an amazing spirit and was up and walking the day following his surgery! Any donation would be greatly appreciated as the balance due for his surgery is still very large, but we could not put off fixing Ozzy's hips until the funds become available because he was in so much pain. Thank you for the emails and donations to his care thus far! We could not continue to help these pups without the wonderful help of our donors! 4-2-09 - Ozzy's sutures were removed yesterday and the surgeon was pleased with his progress. He has an appointment with the Physical Therapist next week for an evaluation. 3-13-09 - UPDATE! Poor little Ozzy's other hip went out and he needs immediate surgery. Please help, we desperately need donations! 3-12-09 - PLEASE HELP! - Ozzy needs to have surgery to repair his hip. The cost of the surgery is $2,000 and then he will also need physical therapy following that. Please consider a donation to help this darling pup. Thank you for caring! 3-2-09 - Ozzy had his dental today and was neutered. He lost twelve teeth and now only has eight left since some had apparently fallen out prior to him coming to us. He also had the cyst from his eye removed and the cyst on his side was removed and is being sent for a biopsy. His vet bills are now at $700 and he still will most likely need surgery on his hip. Anything you can do to help is very much appreciated. 2-25-09 - We just found out that Ozzy has hookworms, but thankfully, is Heartworm negative! 2-24-2009 - Ozzy, AKA Widget as he is lovingly called by his friends, has a lot to deal with before he can search for his forever home. Sadly, his needs have not been met while he was being used as a breeder to make money for someone. He was seen by the Haven vet today and found to have a collapsed trachea that is quite severe looking on his x-ray although he does not have any real respiratory distress. He does start to cough when he barks a lot (and he is a typical little talkative yorkie :) ) and when he gets excited. He has a meimobian cyst on his lower right eyelid, a cyst on his right side that was aspirated and found to be benign, horrible looking teeth (and some have apparently fallen out), and a very dislocated hip that looks like it could have been Legg - Perthes that was ignored when he was younger. Poor little guy has bones rubbing together in his hip joint and has been started on pain meds for that. He also has a distinct curvature to his spine and some arthritis that is probably secondary to his hip problem and his tendency to favor that leg by tucking it. Ozzy is quite the spunky little guy and so far is getting along quite well with his foster siblings. He is scheduled for his neuter and dental on March 2nd and his cysts will also be removed at that time. After that, he will be taken to an orthopedic specialist for an opinion on what can be done for his hip. Anything you can do to donate to Ozzy's care will be so appreciated. And, please keep him in your thoughts and prayers...especially tonight since he had lab work today and we are hoping that it was ok and that he is heartworm negative. He has enough on his plate as it is. Name: Penny May 5, 2008 - Tina, I am so sorry to tell you that Penny passed over the weekend. I think it was peaceful because everything seemed fine the night before, she was eating well, going outside with the other dogs. We found her in her bed in the room curled up in her usual way when we woke up in the morning, and we knew right away because she was always an early riser and would bark till the husband got up and gave her her first breakfast of the day. ( she got a second breakfast with the other dogs ) I know how much she meant to you and it is very hard for me to tell you. We loved her very much and spoiled her. She always went everywhere the other dogs did, like on car rides, and walks , even though she would be in the stroller most of the time, she ate well and as much as she wanted. She never got to be a cuddler, but did make a lot of progress from when we first got her. At least she let us pick her up and sit in our lap for a while until she had enough. She was a big presence in our home with her cranky little personality, and she always made us laugh. We will miss her a lot. She has a nice wooden cross on her grave in our backyard that my husband made for her. Thank you for all you did for her, and for bringing us together. They are waiting for some more tests to get back from the lab. She will have a dental done at the same time. I hope and pray that she is strong enough to withstand the surgery. No heart worms though! The vet tech said she was snapping and biting at them. I tried to warn them. When they brought her out to me her little tail just went to wagging. The more she is with me the more her personality comes out. She is a feisty one and was playing a little with me last night. I put her little kennel in her room this morning because she seems to like it. When I did she ran right in it, went to the back for me to close the door as if to say, "OK, I'm ready lets go" She was so cute, I hated to leave her behind. 4/22/07 - This is Penny! I picked her up from animal control yesterday morning as she was to be PTS on Monday, 4/23/07. She is elderly, probably 10-12 years old; not sure until she goes to the vet on Tuesday. She does seem to have a cold or some other upper respiratory infection. Her teeth are horrible and most likely she will lose a lot of them. The shelter said that she was snippy and picked her up with a towel like she was going to bite their hand off. Poor baby had messed in her kennel and it was caked on her legs. I don't know how long she was her own but she's had some trauma in her life. She was a little snippy with me but the poor girl is scared to death. She is starting to come around and trust me more. Soaking wet she only weighs 3 1/2 lbs. Tiny little angel!! Any donations towards her veterinary care will be so appreciated! Name: Pippi January 28, 2010 - Rest in Peace sweet Pippi. We adopted Pippi from our local humane society, after her owner had passed away at an Assisted Living facility. It seemed they had only feed her hot dogs, and early in the morning, too. She was always waking us up by 4:30 am or so for her breakfast of hot dogs. It took a little doing, but we finally got her to eating regular dog food at a more reasonable hour, and hot dogs was her special treat. From the first day we brought her home, she acted like she always belonged here. She was the boss of everybody. She was 10 years old then and we had her for 6 more years. The last two years she had diabetes and was going blind and deaf, but it didn't stop her from keeping up with the other dogs and enjoying her hot dogs She loved going to Oregon with us and combing the beaches. She loved just riding in the car. She passed away unexpectedly January 28th and it broke my heart that I could not be with her. I still her her little toenails clicking on our floors and suspect I always will. Name: PJ 9/22/08 - It is with a very heavy heart that we have to write that PJ passed and went to Rainbow Bridge this morning. We were so hopeful he would recover from his skin infection and that his heart medicine would help him, but his heart just did not hold out. He laid next to his foster mom on the couch this morning, and passed away. She rushed him to the emergency vet to see if they could do anything, but he was already gone. God bless this sweet boy who gave us kisses the minute we picked him up from the shelter. He was loved by all of us that he touched in Yorkie Haven Rescue. PJ - you will always be in our hearts and we know you are running and playing with the other Haven pups at bridge and waiting for us to see you in heaven. 9/16/2008 - Please say Hello to PJ. He is a very sweet boy who has a severe case of pyoderma, which is a skin infection and really needs help. The skin infection is all over his little body and even inside his ears. You can see in the pictures that his skin is very black, red, and inflamed from the infection and he has a lot of scabby stuff falling off that comes from the pustules that form all over his body. His hair comes out very easily because of the infection and he licks and chews on his feet a lot. He is on an oral antibiotic and an ear ointment to try and clear up the infection as well as getting medicated baths twice a week. He has gotten better since being rescued on September 6th, but he has a long ways to go. He also has an enlarged heart, which he is taking Enalapril for. This severe infection is making him very tired and uncomfortable. His thyroid level is also down, but that could be due to the severe infection and his immune system being down. He was 10.5 pounds in June according to some vet records we received when rescuing him, and is now down to 8 pounds. He is eating well and we are working hard to get him feeling better and this horrible infection cleared up. Name: Rambo 4/9/11 - Rambo passed away today after he went into cardiac arrest. Sweet Rambo, we'll miss you. 3/20/11 - One one-thousand, Two one-thousand, Three one-thousand — What am I doing? I’m counting the seconds until you come to adopt me. When I entered YHR, my previous owners told them that I had previously had two urinary tract infections in the last two years. They knew that something was wrong, so when I went to the YHR dogtor for my initial exam, heartworm test, etc., he checked this out. Seems I had bladder stones, many of them in all sizes. They were able to admit me right away and I was able to be neutered, have my dental and have the bladder stones removed at the same time. The dogtor said that my prostate was very enlarged and that there was so much infection and inflammation going on inside, he was surprised that I wasn't a very sick baby. Also, since my teeth had probably never been cleaned before, I lost all but 1 tooth, so my cute little tongue hangs out and I will need to eat soft food. I know I may not have a beautiful set of teeth to show when I smile, and I'm considered a senior at age 11, but one thing is for sure, I love to get and give attention, like other dogs, and love being with my people all the time. I love my nap time and sleep well through the night. You would never know my age if it weren't posted here because I'm very energetic. I like playing with other dogs, love to eat and have a great outlook on life. Something to think about when you're trying to choose a new addition for your family - you can adopt me and receive love and admiration on a daily basis, or you can adopt a young one with a mouthful of teeth to chew up all of your precious belongings and stays underfoot all the time. 3/13/11 - BIO COMING SOON! Are you all out there? 4/2007: Hi everyone .... it's me Reggie. I wish I had better news to update you, but I've had some medical problems lately. I'm still taking the medicine for pain and for my heart. The other morning I woke up and couldn't see out of my right eye. My foster mom looked at it and I had a blister on it. The vet says that I've rubbed my eye so much, I wore a hole in the cornea and fluid from my eye came through. YUK! It hurts and I have to have medicine put in it 3 times a day and the vet said that either it will help or it won't and then I'll be blind in that eye. I'm having some problems getting around, but I'm hoping this will work and I'll be back to normal again. I'll keep you all updated. 2/2007 - Hi everyone .... it's me Reggie. Well, things have been busy for me. I've been going to this nice vet. He told me and my foster mom that I look to be more around 12 years old and that I'm developing arthritis in my back end. He put me on pain medication for about a week and that helped. My foster mom says that I'm bouncing around a little more than I did before. I also learned that I have a Grade IV heart murmur, which the vet says isn't good. Yesterday he placed me on medicine to help my heart and says that I will have to be on it for the rest of my life. That's ok though, my foster mom sticks it between a piece of cheese and it's helps it go down when there's something good wrapped around the yuckie pill. My vet bills did get a little high due to having x-rays done and blood work, so if you can help by donating .... that would be great. Well, I have to get back to my foster mom so I can get my back stratched .... 08/14/2006: Hello, it's me Reggie. My foster mom took me to the vet the other day and had the benign tumor removed from my foot. I feel a lot lighter now. I have to go back to the vet this week and have the stitches removed. I'll be glad because they poke me when I lick my foot. My foster mom says I'm putting on some weight, it's probably from the extra treats she slips to me when the others aren't around. She tells me not to tell the others .... and I don't because they would be jealous! As soon as a little more hair grows, my foster mom is gonna take me to the groomer to get all handsome .... so ladies watch out... even though I'm already handsome! I hope the groomer doesn't put a bow in my hair, but if my foster mom has her way, I will have one up there. I'm just hoping that my forever family is out there somewhere looking for me. Did I tell you how sweet I am and I get along with everyone?! 7/25/2006: Hello, it's me Reggie again. On Saturday, my foster mom took me to the vet. She thinks I'm about 8 years old, but I don't have to have an operation like my foster brother Eli has to have. Wow, I skirted that one!!! The vet said I don't have any worms in my heart and she poked me like a pin cushion. I was a lot nicer to her than Eli. She looked at the growth that's on the top of my foot and said it looked like a benign tumor, so I do have to go back and have that removed. My foster mom has been giving me extra treats, she says to fatten me up. That's o.kay, I just love to eat. Well, pretty soon I'll be ready to go to my forever family and I hope they are out there .... somewhere .... looking for a pup just like me. 7/16/2006: Hi everybody, my name is Reggie. I know that I don't look much like a Yorkie, but my foster mom said that I'm an Honorary Yorkie! I'm a cute, sweet boy who's already been neutured and I weigh about 10 lbs. I was found on the streets of a town called White Settlement and was in pretty bad shape. My hair was all matted and I had many ticks. The lady who I stayed with, Ms. Pam, before my foster mom got me, gave me a bath and a hair cut. I'm very thin though and you can see my spine and ribs, so my foster mom is going to put some fat on me. That's fine with me, cuz I love to eat! My foster mom says I am always wagging my tail and that's cuz I'm just to happy to have a place to live. I'm not ready to be adopted, cuz I have to go to the vet this week and have some things checked out. I have some type of growth on the top of my paw about the size of a grape and we are going to have to see what the vet wants to do. But, don't worry, I'll be back to tell you when I'm ready. Name: Remington McDuff Remington McDuff November 24, 1996 ~ April 24, 2008 Hello Everyone It's with great sorrow and a heavy heart I must advise everyone of Rem's passing. I said goodbye to my boy yesterday at 10:15 AM. I held him in my arms for the last time as I told Dr. Abramson to administer the final relief for Rem. He gently fell asleep as I told him "I love you" over and over again and long after his last breath left his tired little body. Although we won numerous battles against GME, it won the war in the end as I knew it would. It was time to say goodbye. We had fought GME together for 19 months and we were both very tired from it. The last eight days were spent fighting an infection in and out of the emergency rooms. Dr. Sisson was there for us all the way, but all of our best efforts could not keep the monsters of GME and infection from taking my boy. I'm so happy for Rem now that he is free from suffering. I feel that a huge weight has been lifted from my chest knowing he's with my previous pets Barnum, Bailey, Katy, Holly and Jinx. I'm sure their all running together through endless fields of cool green grass pulling and fighting over squeaky toys. I also know that someday I'll be with them again and be blessed with their love once more. My friends say that Rem had a wonderfully spoiled life for 11 years and that "he" was lucky to have me as his father. I tell them they are wrong............. "I" was the lucky one. Rest in peace Rem. I love you. ~ As written by Mike McDuff, Remington's person Mike & Remington McDuff Summer 2007 I received the Mike's words in an email that touched my heart & I wanted to share them. Meeting this amazing little Yorkie changed my life forever because he is the reason I fell in love with the breed. Rem loved his Tickle Me Elmo, squeaky toys, playing frizby with his dad, barking at the lizards & frogs on the back of the house, chasing squirrels & sleeping under the covers. He softened his dad's heart. Rem was the center of Mike's world. Mike did everything humanly possible to save Rem although I'm sure deep in his heart he knew that Rem would not survive GME. Both Texas A&M & Gulf Coast treated him. Mike also found a GME guru in Boston over a year ago that he talked to regularly. I guess it was almost a month ago that Mike took Rem to Boston to see the doctor. I believe Mike's determination kept Rem alive for the 19 months following the diagnosis. Mike fought for Rem although I'm sure he ruffled a few feathers along the way. I talked to Mike this morning, and Remington is home with him now. As for me, I have a few memories that live in my heart. For Mike's Christmas 2001, I had Rem's portrait painted by Heidi Choquette. Mike had become concerned that Rem had a stalker because I was constantly taking pictures of him! Little did he know that Heidi kept asking for more & more pictures because she wanted to capture Rem's likeness & personality perfectly........and she did. In 2002, Rem marked my brand new TV. No matter what I used to scrub the dried urine out of the little speaker holes, I can still see his mark. My own Remington McDuff signature...imagine that! When Mike would go out of town, I always made sure I had one of his caps or a shirt he'd worn so Rem would have his dad's smell to help him sleep. The fight is over, Remington. Give my Tootsie Mae a kiss for me. Run free, little man. Love, Vicki May 2, 2008 Name: Roriee May 11, 2011 - t is with profound sadness that we report that Roriee has gone to Rainbow Bridge. She was a little trooper and we all have been touched by her spirit and will to live. She will be missed by her foster family. God speed sweet Roriee. 2/9/11 – Roriee is still doing well. Unfortunately the chemo she is on for her GME is currently on backorder, so in the meantime we are putting her on cyclosporine and will monitor her progress to make sure she doesn’t start to get bad again. There is one other medication we can try if this does not work. They are hoping to have the chemo back in stock in a couple of months, but do not know for sure. In the meantime we will pray adding this new medication will help and keep her continuing down the path she is on now. She still continues to protect the house with her ‘Roars.’ She is such a happy and sweet little girl and we are thankful for every day with have with her! 12/28/10 - Roriee is still doing great and protecting the house from any intruders! She 'roars' to let them know they should stay away. She still gets her chemo treatments every three weeks and is doing well with them. We are thankful for every day we have with this little munchkin! 11/8/10 – Roriee is still doing very well and is continuing her chemo treatment. She is still feisty as ever and lets us know any time any of the pups are getting out of hand, if there is someone at the door, or she isn’t happy with something. She is a very sweet little girl and we are thankful for every day we have with her! ----- We just cannot get over how far Roiree has come since entering her loving foster home. From not being able to eat and stand up, to running around her foster home, giving kisses and co-existing with her foster siblings. When she first came to us, poor Roriee would utter a loud, shreaking scream with just the slightest touch or movement. It was heartbreaking. Without all of your prayers and the wonderful medical attention from Roiree's vet that she needed so desperately, Roiree would probably not be here today. It's always amazing what A POSITIVE ATTITUDE can do! 09/29/10 – Roriee is doing well. She was put back on Prednisone because her eyesight was going, and it has come back in one of her eyes. The other one she can’t either see at all or very little. She has got a lot of spunk in her step since going on the prednisone and her appetite has also increased because of it. She is very happy and ruling the roost in her foster home, which is the way she likes it being the smallest munchkin of the bunch. She goes back into tomorrow for her next round of chemo. Roriee sends her barks and tail wags everyone’s way for your continued thoughts and prayers for her. 09/07/10 – Roriee is at the doctor today for her every three week round of chemo. Within the past few days we have noticed that Roriee seems to be losing her eyesight again. We asked the doctor about it and he agreed that it appeared that way. Therefore, we are going to put her back on prednisone and he is going to have the ophthalmologist check her eyes just to make sure there isn’t something else going on, but we suspect this is being caused by the GME. We are hopeful that the prednisone will help and she can regain some of what she is losing now. Please continue to keep Roriee in your thoughts and prayers. Thank You! 09/01/2010 - Roriee is still doing great!! She does have an infection in one of her ears, but is on medicine for it. She is continuing with her chemo treatment and is still fussing at the other pups when they play! Her red blood count was a little off with her last check, so we are going to check that again after her chemo next week. She is still a little spitfire and has lots of personality! Her specialist wishes he had a video of her at her worst to show how amazingly well she is doing today. Thanks to everyone for you continued prayers for little Roriee, she keeps thriving! 06/28/10 - Roriee is still doing fantastic! She sure has opened up vocally and learned quite well from the other pups in the home! She chimes right in and barks when someone comes in the door or barks at the other pups when they are playing and she doesn't think they should. She loves to play all the time! She is not a fan of baths though, she get very mopey for about a day after she gets her bath. She is continuing her chemo treatments and they are still working! The doctor keeps saying he wouldn't believe it had he not seen it with his own eyes. Thank you to everyone for your continued thoughts and prayers! It has been a miracle for little Miss Roriee! She sends tails wags and barks to everyone! 6/11/10 – Roriee is still doing fantastic! The doctor took the bandage off her leg earlier this week and decided to leave it off because it is healing so well. The doctor will check her leg again next week to make sure it is still healing as it should. We have also transitioned her to the new steroid without any issues. She clearly has a dislike to some non-yorkies though! Her foster family is babysitting a pup that is not a Yorkie and she yells at the pup anytime she sees it or hears it! She started playing with toys yesterday too! She pulls on them, chews on them, and will go get them if you throw them. She is doing SOOO good. She isn’t quite as stable as most pups because of her neurological problems and her back leg, but she does good. We think she may have regained some of her vision as well! She is able to clearly follow objects now. She has come such a long way and continues to improve! The prayers and thoughts for her have done wonders, please continue them!! 06/03/10 - Roriee had her second chemo treatment last week and her bloodwork this week and is still doing great! She got a little spunkier after her treatment, so you can kind of tell when it is getting time for another one. We are taking her off the one steroid and going to start her on the other one so we can get the necessary antibiotics into her system and get her staph infection cleared up. She gets the bandage on her leg change once a week and the doctor said it is healing wonderfully! She is doing fantastic! 5/25/10 - Roriee went in for her second treatment today and a bandage change on her leg. She is still doing really well and her leg is healing. The specialist said today that he never thought she would be doing as good as she is given how bad she was. It must be the power of prayer from all of her many supporters and followers. Thank you so much to everyone who keeps praying for her, you have all helped her so much! She sends many tail wags everyone's way!! 05/21/10 – Roriee is still doing really well from her last chemo treatment and goes in next week for the next round. We did have to take her in the other day because her leg wasn’t healing from where they had put the catheter in and it had become abscessed and was bothering her. The doctor cleaned it really well, took a tissue sample, stapled her up, and put a bandage on that will need to remain for 10 to 14 days to help it heal. Being her white blood count was down from the chemo treatment, her body wasn’t able to heal and fight it off as good as it could have. She is on antibiotics and we will determine if those need to change based on the results from the tissue. In cleaning and digging into this abscess, the doctor found that one of her tendons had torn in her leg that helps with her ability to flex her toes and extend and bend her leg. The doctor said this could have been caused from the prednisone, which can weaken the tendons, and possibly in combination with the catheter being put in. They can do a surgery to fix it, but since we are in the very early stages of her GME treatment we felt it was best to hold off on doing anything at this point. The tendon will not cause her any pain nor will it hinder her ability to walk and move around. She may just have trouble with flexing her toes and may have her leg extend every once in a while because of it. She is a real trooper and it hasn’t brought her spirits down at all. She is still as sweet and happy as can be! 05/18/10 - Roriee is still doing really well! I attempted to see if she has any sight and unfortunately she didn't close either eye unless I touched the hair around her eye. I used my finger one time and a paper towel the next to see if that made a difference, and it didn't. Maybe her other senses, smell and hearing, are just so good that it helps her get around and makes it seem like she has some site left, I am not sure. But, if she is truly completely blind, it has not hindered her at all! She still gets around very well! She is an amazing little girl! 05/16/10 - Roriee is doing SO good! She has been walking around real good, wagging her tail a lot, and even lets out a single bark when the other dogs bark or she wants something. She gets excited when you come home and is wagging her tail waiting for you to pick her up and love her! She always looks at you with those big brite eyes and big ears, but isn't she so cute? She follows you anywhere you go, and if she loses your trail, all you have to do is talk and she figures it out. She has done amazingly well and keeps getting better, so please continue the prayers for Roriee. She goes back in around the 25th for her next chemo dose. 5/12/10 - Roriee went into the doctor today for a blood workup to check to see what the chemo is doing and she had her cast removed. They were going to put the cast back on, but after taking it off she didn't not cry or scream, which indicated she was not in any pain, so she did not need the cast any longer. She has been up moving around more and hasn't been as cranky. She is still quite unsteady and 'knuckles,' meaning she flips her front paw under and cannot get it back to the right way. She sometimes just lays down when that happens otherwise she falls over. She is eating and drinking well and it better than when we first picked her up. With that said, Roriee is still a very sick little girl with so many medical issues against her. We pray for good days, but know that bad days are a huge possibility given all that she has wrong. Her poor little brain has been tortured by her medical issues. Our biggest prayer for Roriee is for her to be pain free and have peace, so please keep the prayers coming her way! 5/9/10 - Today the doctor decided it might be best for Roriee to be in a home environment instead of a clinical environment, so we went and picked her up. This evening we took her outside to try and let her go potty, since that was what they were doing at the vet, and she was actually able to walk around a little bit. She wasn't completely steady, but she wasn't falling over on her side each time she got up like the night we picked her up. It was so exciting to see her move around without falling and without screaming! She didn't scream once while she was moving around and actually came to me when I knelt down a few feet from her. This was one small step forward and we sure hope these are signs of good things to come! Thank you everyone for your continued support and prayers for Roriee, she has so many things against her medically that she can use all the prayers she can get! May 6, 2010 - There is no change today in Roriee's condition. For the time being, she will remain hospitalized. She has received the necessary treatments for the GME and we feel it is best to let her stay there under constant and 24 hour supervision. Hopefully, these treatments will begin to help with the GME. May 5, 2010 - Roriee is actually doing a little bit better this afternoon. They put the body cast on her and they also have her on Hydromorphone. She does cry a bit when they take her outside, but she is much more comfortable!! Please keep this little angel in your thoughts and prayers. May 5, 2010 - So far, Roriee is not responding to the medication. The biggest problem right now is her comfort level. She is still screaming whenever she moves even the slightest bit. The neurologist is not sure if this is pain from the AAI or something possibly related to the GME, perhaps behavioral. He does lean towards it being from pain. Humane euthanasia is being discussed but we want to be absolutely certain that we have done everything possible to help her. The plan for today is to complete the infusion of cytosar this morning. We asked about a body cast to see if that might make her more comfortable until we can see if she will respond to the medicine. We will then give it another 24 hours to see how things are going. Sometimes it can take a couple of weeks before the medicine will show improvement. The only way we can have the luxury of that time is if the body cast helps her comfort level. May 4, 2010 - Very sad news from the neurologist, but not without some hope. After doing a MRI and spinal tap they have found that Roriee has multiple issues: GME AAI Hydrocephalus ----- Clearly GME is the major issue at this time and she is being started on a chemotherapy drug today. She will be hospitalized for 48 hours of treatment. Providing she responds to this treatment, the next step will be treatments every 3 weeks for a year. Nothing else can be taken care of at this time if ever. The neurosurgeon did say that some of her other issues could be due to the GME. I am sure he did not mean the AAI. But...there is no way they can operate on her. The GME is the immediate problem that must be addressed. We are so sad for Roriee, but also hopeful that perhaps we can get her stabilized and she can have a quality of life for whatever time she may have with all of us. Please keep her in your prayers...she really needs them! May 3, 2010 - Roriee was lovingly surrendered by her mother who could not care for her due to her own medical problems. May 3, 2010 - Little Roriee has some severe medical issues and will be seeing a vet on May 4, 2010. We will update when we have a plan for her care. Now I lay me down to sleep, My mind was tired, my body was weak; I loved my owner til I couldn't love anymore, But I was no good to him in the end - when I could give no more; So into "The Building" we went one day, And on a cold, wet concrete floor I lay; Wishing he'd change his mind and come back for me, But that day I never did see; Someone did come and take me away, An angel from Yorkie Haven Rescue and I'll never forget the day; She brought me to her home and cradled me in her arms, She promised me that she'd never again let anyone do my any harm; Even though this angel gave me 100% of her love; The heartache of missing my owner was heard from God above; He knew my heart was hurting and wanted me out of pain, But he said for me to see the rainbow, I had to go through a little rain; So when the day came for me to join the yorkies that have passed before, My new friend and Yorkie Haven angel helped me open the door; She was there with me to the bitter end, I could not have asked for a better friend; I sure wish my owner could have seen me off that day, Maybe he was too scared, maybe too cold, maybe too blind -- So for him I Pray" *********************************************** Lab results showed that Roxie was in kidney failure and though she did very well for a couple of weeks on her special diet, the stress of being taken away from her owner was just too much for her 15 year old body to handle. Roxie then got to the point where she didn't want to eat anymore. She was put on antibiotics as well as medication to help stimulate her appetite. She was also getting sub-q fluids three to four times a week, and had to be syringe fed. It didn't take long for Roxie to let me know that she was getting tired of me trying to get medication in her. She would also turn her head and even clinch her jaw when it came time for me to syringe feed her. Roxie was tired and had, had enough. Roxie was ready to go home. As difficult as it was for me to think about letting Roxie go, I knew that she wanted nothing more than to be at peace and I wanted her at peace. I felt so blessed and thankful to have been able to cradle and comfort this loving baby, who so strongly touched my heart in the short time that I had her, while she so peacefully, slipped away into her new loving world. Roxie has now been fitted with her angel wings and I have no doubt that she will be waiting patiently, with the forgiveness that every canine creature so lovingly and selflessly gives mankind......for the moment, when she sees her special person who meant so much to her.....her daddy. Though your journey at Carly's Castle was limited, your love will be everlasting. Godspeed my precious little Roxie. Dear sweet Roxie, ended up in the "throwaway land" because her owner of 15 years decided that he couldn't stand watching his "precious" little girl run into things anymore. So, to solve his heartache, he came up with a brilliant idea and that was to go and dump his precious blind little friend, who had been his faithful companion for 15 years, into a kill shelter and told them that he wanted her euthanized. Of course, this shouldn't surprise any of us, because that's what we would all do.....ISN'T IT!?!?!?!?! Thankfully, the wonderful people at this kill shelter called me immediately, telling me how precious little Roxie was and that they just didn't have the heart to put her to sleep, because she still had some wonderful days left in her, even though she was blind. Well, we wasted no time getting her out of the shelter and to our vet where she was checked out and the one good thing is that Roxie isn't totally blind. She does see shadows and even though she is very cautious when she walks around, she does manage beautifully. The real heartbreaker came when we brought Roxie home to live at Carly's Castle. Roxie arrived at a destination that she was unfamiliar with and was very confused as to why she wasn't with her owner. As hard as I tried to make her transition an easy one, Roxie could sense this wasn't home and definitely knew we weren't her family. It was obvious that Roxie wanted to go back home to be with the only person that she knew and loved for the past 15 years.....her daddy. How do I know this, you ask!?!?! Well, for the first 24 hours, all Roxie did was moan and howl, hoping that her cries would be heard by her daddy and that he would come running back to get her. Unfortunately, this is reality and I can't make up that happy ending, where her owner comes running back for her, tears streaming down his face and they go off to live happily ever after. No, instead I spent the first 24 hours with Roxie cradled in my arms while pacing the floors, praying that she would feel our love and comfort towards her. Honestly, the best loving gift that Roxie's owner could have given her, was to have taken his precious girl to HIS vet, cradled her in his arms and spoke softly to her about all of their wonderful time together, while HIS vet humanely sent her to Rainbow Bridge. But instead her owner, like so many other owners, opt for....the sterile room that smells of death.....a cold metal table.....strangers, though some very loving strangers, trying to craddle and comfort your pet and tell them what a good girl or boy they've been.....a communal cremation and a fragrant landfill sanctuary where their ashes are then laid to rest. We live in such a fast paced, want it now, throwaway society, that sometimes I think we forget what's most important in life. I know if the roles were reversed, Roxie gladly and most patiently, would have been there to the very end for her best friend. Carly's Castle has taken in many pupsters from anywhere and everywhere, but I've never had such a heart wrenching experience like I had when my precious Roxie arrived. There is always a "first" for everything, and no doubt, when the next "first" comes along, I may not understand the "how's' and why's'" of it, but I won't be a bit surprised. Please keep Roxie in your prayers. Thank you. Name: Sandy September 1 2007: It is with great sadness that I report to you that Sandy traveled to Heaven yesterday August 31, 2007 at 11:03 AM. While he is missed by his foster mom and foster siblings, we all know that he is no longer in pain and is romping in the meadows and sniffing flowers. July 31, 2007: Sandy is really starting to show his age. He is very thin even though he does eat pretty well. He is losing muscle mass and ambulates slowly except for the times he goes outside with the other pups. He then gets this strength from somewhere and bounds out of the house with his ears flopping, barking the entire time. Following is his story prior to becoming a Furever Ours pup: March 31, 2007: After many trips to the vet and to a veterinary ophthamologist, Sandy's eye has healed. He most likely only sees shadows out of his left eye, but has some vision in his right eye. He gets around very well and loves to go ourside. As you can see, he looks SO much better! He still has a good appetite as long as he gets his home cooking and it is warm! The vet believes that he is easily around 15 or older. February 21, 2007: Sandy has been to a vet who specializes in cardiology/internal medicine. He had two ultrasounds...one of his abdomen and one of his chest. We still do not know exactly what is going on with his GI tract, but he has been started on meds for his heart. Poor little man has really been through it. Additionally, his eye was evaluated again today and one ulcer has healed, but not the other; so another drop was added to his regimen. The main goal is to save the eye and to try to retain as much vision as possible. He is certainly much more cheerful. He holds his eye open now and even runs outside with my other pups. His appetite is great with his new food! February 6, 2007: Poor Sandy developed a GI problem for 24 hours and was at the vet yesterday. He received an injection for that and a fecal was done. Results were negative, and he is better today. His eye was still ulcerated so they did a procedure to help it heal. Today he is keeping his eye open more and I am hopeful it is improving. He has an appointment on Thursday, Feb. 8th. His appetite continues to improve thanks to a special recipe from a healthy cookbook for pups! February 3, 2007: Sandy had the stint removed from his eyelid yesterday. His ulcers are not nearly as deep so we think we have saved his eye. Not sure about how his vision will be. He is back to square one receiving the ulcer drops every 24 hours and will be reevaluated on the 5th. Thankfully, the pain medicine has helped him and he seems to be a bit more cheerful. I am cooking for him (he LOVES that) and he has now gained one pound in 10 days!! January 25, 2007 In addition to all of his other medical issues, now poor little Sandy has two eye ulcers in one eye. He has a stint to protect that eye and promote healing; and is receiving eye drops around the clock to try to save his eye. He is on antibiotics and pain medication. Needless to say, his medical bills are mounting and anything you can donate would be appreciated...or just use the links on our front page to help out! I am putting a pic of his eye here not to upset anyone, but to show what this poor baby is going through. January 2007: Sandy has been having a problem with his appetite and has been losing quite a bit of weight. He had blood tests done and an x-ray which showed an enlarged heart and small liver. He then went to an internal medicine/cardiologist and two ultrasounds were done. He also had special blood tests done which have been sent to Texas A&M. Anything you can do to help with his veterinary costs will be appreciated. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. August 19, 2006 - This is a recent picture of Sandy. He is doing SO well and is getting over his shyness. He will be groomed this week and will be even more handsome than he is now if that is possible! Will post a new picture soon. August 2, 2006 - Did some investigating and found out that Lincoln's real name is Sandy. He responds to that, so we have given him his name back! Someone had found him in November 2005 and she had named him and also cared for him for a few months. She gave him to another person and somehow he ended up in a shelter. Poor baby has been around. He is adjusting very well. He is a bit hand shy..seems someone must have hit him at some time. Very sweet little boy! July 15, 2006 - GOOD NEWS!! Lincoln's eyes are doing very well thanks to some super duper concoction the vets make here for ulcerated corneas. It has to be used every hour the first day..every two the second..and so on. BUT...it has worked! His left eye is fine and the right only has a couple of scratches left on the cornea. No cataracts and he is now opening his eyes and can see! He can hear as well...not sure how well..but he does look up when I call his name now! He has another issue that we will need to have addressed...a grade IV heart murmur. He will be seen by the cardiologist for this. He is a darling pupster! Just so wonderfully easy going and gets along very well with the other pups in the house. Someone will be very lucky to have him as a pal! July 9, 2006 - Lincoln has been tossed around quite a bit the past year. He was rescued from the streets in December 2005 by a lady who took care of him for a while, but then turned him over to a shelter in June 2006. He was scheduled to be euthanized when we found out about him. Lincoln is thought to be 6 years old. For his age, he does have quite a bit of "wear and tear" by visual examination; but his lab work was not all that bad except for elevated white count due to an awful upper respiratory infection he is being treated for. He is thought to be almost deaf and now due to ulcerated corneas, could end up partially blind in both eyes. He is receiving treatment for them and does have some vision, but we think it is very limited. His skin is a mess from flea bites, but that will heal. He is an absoulte LOVE. He lets his foster mom put his eye drops in and give him his medicine without a fuss at all. He does not even flinch when she touches him to wake him. Just a very trusting little boy in spite of what he has been through. He loves to go out on a leash for a walk and is housebroken. Please think about taking this special little boy into your home if you have time to cuddle with him and love him. He is a sweetheart! It is a very sad day for all of us, Tinkerbell was such a special little girl. I'VE BEEN ADOPTED!! 07/06/10 – Tinkerbell is doing really well!! She is able to breathe much better and her coughing has gotten better because of the medicine. She is a very sweet little girl that would love nothing more than to have you pet her all day long! With her breathing better she is now able to roll over and have you rub her belly. She is not housetrained, but has done well with wearing a diaper and the diaper has actually helped to keep hernia in too. 06/29/10 – Tinkerbell is a Chihuahua Yorkie mix that has bounced from home to home her entire life. She is a very sick little girl. She has a series of medical issues, which includes a very enlarged heart, a grade 6 heart murmur (which is the worst a pup can have), chronic bronchitis/respiratory disease, a hernia, and bad dental disease. Her bronchitis is keeping her from being able to breathe very well, so we have started her on some medicine to try and help her breathe better. It is only a matter of time before she goes into congestive heart failure, so we are watching her closely. Her teeth are so bad that they have just been falling out over time. Because she is so sick, we are unable to surgically repair any of her issues because she likely would not make it through surgery. It is amazing she has lived as long as she has with all her medical issues, so we are trying our best to give her some relief and make her happy and comfortable. She is a very sweet little girl that loves all affection. Please keep little Tinkerbell in your thoughts and prayers. Name: Truman December 12, 2009 - It is with deep sadness that we must tell you that sweet Truman went to Rainbow Bridge this evening. He had started having severe medical issues and it was thought he had a brain tumor. He was so loved by his foster family and will be missed. They were his furever home after all. September 4, 2009 - Truman has come so far and now loves belly rubs every morning. He is such a good boy and loves to lay in the backyard in the shade of the oak tree. When you look at his sweet face he always looks like he is smiling back at you. Although he does not see well, you wouldn't know it when he is out in the yard. He sure can move fast when he has open space to roam. Truman loves to follow his foster dad around the yard and does the cutest prance. When you come home he is right in there with his brothers and sister to great you, tail wagging and a smile on his face. He's so good for car rides and walks right beside you and never pulls while walking on a leash. April 1, 2009 Hey it's me Truman! It's been a while since I checked in but I've been busy! I've gained a few pounds, got a new hairdo, get 2 great meals a day and my arthritis is so much better with the little pill I get every morning. I love to lay in the yard when the sun it out, hang out with my foster dad in the garage on the weekends and sleep in my comfy bed. I am very proud to say that I am full housetrained and when it is time for me to go outside I just give a bark and outside I go for potty! I love to go for rides in the car and am a great passenger too. My eyesight is not all that great but if I follow close behind my foster mom or dad in the yard I am just fine. I also have great manners on a leash. My foster mom says that I would be best in a senior home that is quiet and peaceful. Due to my arthritis and eyesight carpet and no stairs is also important to me so that I can get around better. If you have what it takes to be my new forever home please fill out my application. Once you see me you will love me. :-p February 25, 2009 Well it’s been 2 whole weeks since I have been living in this new place and boy do I love it here! I am feeling so much better now. Mom cut all the mats off me so now I can look up at her, wag my tail, and she gives me lots of love. Oh yeah, and the food here is unbelievable! I have never had so much food! Wow it is really yummy too! Mom warms it in the microwave and I gobble it up. She gives me as much food as my hungry tummy wants to eat. She told me that since I have been eating I am getting stronger every day. When it is time to go potty I like to stand up in my bed and bark for mommy to take me outside. Since my eyes are not all that great I have a hard time finding the door so I get picked up and carried outside. But I am a good boy and always try to make it outside. When I am finished I come right back to mom for a great bid hug and she always tells me what good boy I am! It’s that neat that someone loves me that much after all the time I was forgotten about. I heard mom on the phone yesterday talking to her friend Mary daGroomer. I heard her say that I get to go for a ride in the car and we are going to visit with Mary daGroomer. I really like to take rides in the car so I can’t wait to meet Mary daGroomer. I’ll bet she will even have food for me! Mom said she is bringing the camera to take pictures because I am going to be so handsome. Hey wait I already am pretty darn handsome from the hair cut that mom gave me after all of those baths that she gave me. Hmmm, I guess she must be giving away money or something because my foster brothers and sister told me they feel like a million bucks after their visit to Mary daGroomer. I will have to send you some of these new pictures mom said she is going to take of me after my visit with my new friend Mary daGroomer! Well, I am back from car ride and my visit with Mary and just look at me now! That Mary daGroomer is great and boy do I feel like a million bucks just like they said I would. Am I not the most handsome little man that you have ever seen? Just wait till I have my teeth cleaned and that neuter thing mom keeps talking about! Wahoo! It just keeps getting better and better. :) February 12, 2009 - I went to the doggie doctor today. They put me and mom into a separate room because I have been coughing and they didn’t want to make the other doggies sick. Then the doggie doc came in to see me. Boy he really nice and paid a lot of attention to me. He had such gentle hands I knew he was not going to hurt me. Well, he told mom that I have a very bad infection in my teeth that has caused a chronic ear infection and upper respiratory infections that was making me cough. He gave me a bunch of medicine that will help make all the pain in my ears and mouth go away. They also took blood and talked about something called a dental and neuter. Boy, mommy really has a thing about baths! I got my second bath today. Hmmmm, before today I didn’t even know what a bath was and now I’ve had 2 in just as many days! When she was finished she started cutting some of my mats away and boy did that feel GREAT! When she was done there was more hair on the floor then on me! Wow I feel great! Oh yeah, I love peanut butter. Daddy gave me some on his finger with that stuff the doggie doc said would help me feel better. YUMMY! So far this place is GREAT! Maybe tomorrow I will be able to meet the other fur kids in the house. I hear them playing and romping around but mommy said we have to wait a few more days until she is sure that I am healthy enough not to make them sick like me. I can’t WAIT because they sound like they have a great time in this wonderful place. Feb. 11 2009 - Hi, my name is Truman and I have become the star of my own show! It was only yesterday that I was in a shelter that was very loud and cold. But it was much better than living on the streets like I had been for a very long time. I stayed at that shelter for almost three weeks and nobody paid any attention to me. But at least I was warm and dry. What I didn’t know was that way over in Illinois over 400 miles away, many phone calls were being made about little old me. When the sun came out yesterday little did I know that a very nice lady would come to pick me up. She scooped me up and tried to look into my scared eyes but there was way too much hair for her to see them or me to see her. She took one look at me and I knew it was love. She put me into her warm car and I knew I was safe! She had a young man with her that liked to listen to rock music on our ride home. Let me tell you I am so glad that I wasn’t living on the street with the storms that were going on outside the nice safe warm car. The nice lady had to pull over a few times because of the storms, it was raining so hard that she couldn’t see the road. Two states, a couple of MickyD’s stops for that hungry young man and we finally stopped. That nice lady and her son told me that I was home and I could call her Mommy. I got to take a nice walk all around their big yard and I met my new daddy too! He’s a really cool guy, he picked me up and gave me some love too! Mom disappeared into the house to let her other “kids” know she was home. Boy were they excited to see her. While she did that I hung out with my new daddy in the garage where I decided to lay on a sleeping bag and take a little nap. You know when you live on the streets you just need to find a place that is comfy and you try to keep warm. I thought I found heaven. But I was asleep only a few minutes and mommy came back and picked me up. Wow! She took me into the house! Then she put me into the kitchen sink and gave me a bath and used a brush and comb on my hair. Daddy was there helping too. He looked so sad when he looked at me and just kept shaking his head. I don’t know why anyone would be sad to be here. This new place is great! When she was finished I got a giant bowl of food and fresh water. Then I get a nice warm blanket in my new crate INSIDE the house. What more could a fella ask for. This is heaven! 2-11-09 - Truman just came to us today ... a long 400 mile journey and is resting quietly tonight. As you can see, he is a mess having been found on the streets and then taken to a shelter where he has been since January 27th. He will be getting a bath tonight and will also be visiting a groomer soon; and we will update his pictures. He has some issues with his back legs. He does not bend his knees and ankles and sometimes falls over when walking. He also is coughing. Truman will be seen by our vet tomorrow and we will update his bio then. Name: Winston 2-1-08 - 5:15 PM - Winston earned his angel wings today. Precious little Winston is at peace now and playing with the Haven pups who passed before him. He will be missed by his foster mom and siblings. He was a such a sweet, sweet little man. 1-30-08 - Please keep little Winston in your thoughts and prayers. His little kidneys are starting to fail. During his hospitalization in August his lab values had been off quite a bit, but had improved with IV fluids. These lab values are not good again and worse than they were then. He was hospitalized today for IV fluids and will be returning each day for the next two days at which point his blood will be tested again to see if there is improvement. He really is a very sick little man, but is amazingly perky in spite of that. The only clue we had that he was not well was a change in appetite. We are hopeful that, with his great little spirit, he will do well over the next couple of days. 12-2007 - Winston is doing fantastic again! Quite the spunky little man! He would love to have his very own furever home! September 8, 2007: Winston is back to being his perky little self. He will be going back to the vet this week for his follow up lab studies. August 14, 2007 - Poor little Winston has been very ill the past couple of days with gastrointestinal distress. He has spent two days at the vet clinic for IV fluids and medication. Please keep this little sweetie in your thoughts and prayers. March 31, 2007 - This little man is quite the character! There is nothing really much to say in addition to his original bio. December 12, 2006 - Winston is a sweet and active 11 year young pup looking for a loving home! He was found wandering the streets with rotting teeth and nails that were so long, they were curving under his little paws. He had his dental and lost 12 teeth, but that has not stopped him! Winston eats like a champ and runs around like a youngster! Winston loves to cuddle and loves belly rubs.
